It appears that the Fair Political Practices Commission is giving a second thought to investigating Govern For California, a campaign donor group with 18 local chapters, for violating election finance rules related to contribution limits. As reported by CalMatters, on Monday the Commission issued a letter that said “further review of the relationship between the GFC and its chapters is warranted.” The turn of events may have been partly due to an investigative piece run by CalMatters in August, that looked at how the GFC’s “independent” chapters were largely funded by the same donors and made identical contributions to the same candidates on the same day. Govern For California was put together by David Crane, who served as an adviser to Governor Schwarzenegger, in order to push back on the political influence organized labor has in Sacramento.
