How much would you pay for off-shore wind? How about $757 million? That’s what five energy companies paid as a result of the federal government’s first-ever auction for leases to build wind farms off California’s coast. As reported by CalMatters’ Nadia Lopez, the amount was far less than the $4.37 billion paid in February for six leases off New York and New Jersey, but it is seen a step forward, and per Governor Newsom, it “is an historic step on California’s march toward a future free of fossil fuels.” The auction included five parcels of ocean water: 3 off of Morro Bay and 2 off of Humboldt County.
