Quick Peeks 9/16/2022

  • Breaking News – Last night, the U.S. Department of Justice announced former USC Dean Marilyn Flynn has agreed to plead guilty to a “federal charge that she bribed longtime politician Mark Ridley-Thomas by funneling $100,000 he provided from his campaign account through USC to a nonprofit operated by his son to obtain a lucrative county contract.”  Read the entire DOJ press release.

  • Someone should explain to Sacramento City Councilmember Sean Loloee the old adage: if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.  Maybe someone should even take his shovel.  As Calpeek has previously discussed, Loloee is facing investigations by the city, state and federal governments.  This week, when his constituents inquired on the status of the city’s investigation into his residency, they received an angry, expletive laden response from their Councilmember.  Calpeek is not repeating what Loloee said, but it is safe to assume the Councilmember has a potty mouth.  The Sacramento Bee has more details here.

  • No vacation?  The 2024 campaigns are already underway and we’re not just talking about the U.S. Presidency.  For example, the City of Los Angeles limits city council campaigns to fundraising for 18 months prior to the election.  Well, guess what – we’re 18 months away from the March 5, 2024 Primary Election.

  • Wait, did the previous Quick Peek just say that the next primary is in March 2024?.  Aren’t the primaries held in June?  The answer: most state primaries have been held in June, but they sometimes get moved in Presidential election years so voters can have more of an impact on choosing their party’s Presidential nominee.  Those standing around the water cooler think the March date may get moved, but until then, mark your calendar!

  • In last week’s Calpeek, we discussed the fact that Gavin Newsom’s campaign for Governor did not submit a ballot statement in the official state Voter Information Guide.  This reminded those around the water cooler that Newsom’s team also forgot to request his party affiliation be listed next to his name during the 2021 recall election..  Maybe running for President (wink wink) is distracting the Governor’s team.
