No major surprises as the California Democratic Party wrapped up its 3+ day semi-virtual convention. All statewide incumbents received at least 92% of the vote for endorsement except for Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. Lara did receive the party’s endorsement despite a strong challenge by Assemblymember Marc Levine. There were several important arguments, non-important arguments, platform battles, and endorsement fights, but the most interesting moment was when delegates began to realize they endorsed a candidate for Board of Equalization despite a conviction, disbarment, and slumlord accusations reported in the S.F. Chronicle. Party leaders are now looking at options to rescind incumbent BOE Member Mike Schaefer’s endorsement.
